In case you’ve ever wondered what outdated gender roles look like, two North Dakota lawmakers offered their expertise on the subject.
Bernie Satrom and Vernon Laning, Republican legislators in the North Dakota House of Representatives, voted against repealing North Dakota’s so-called Blue Laws that keep businesses closed on Sunday morning. Their reasoning? It keeps women in the home, serving their husbands and not spending money.
“I don’t know about you, but my wife has no problem spending everything I earn in six and a half days,” Laning said. “And I don’t think it hurts at all to have a half day off.”
Satrom’s reasoning was even more extreme, as he said on Sundays wives should be “making [the husband] breakfast, bringing it to him in bed and then after that go take your kids for a walk.”
In case you needed some reassurance, it’s definitely 2017. Just maybe not in the North Dakota House of Representatives.
