Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds had one of the most memorable moments of the Golden Globes Sunday night when they locked lips, but Garfield explained to Stephen Colbert that it wasn’t some throwaway moment.
“I just wanted Ryan to know I loved him no matter whether he won or lost [Best Actor],” Garfield said. “I wanted him to know it doesn’t matter, it’s how you play the game and he showed up, he gave his all, and it doesn’t change anything in my heart.”
Garfield, who planned the moment with Reynolds and Reynolds’ wife Blake Lively beforehand, thought it was important that Reynolds knew that. Garfield indeed appeared to treat it as a tender moment, one he soon repeated with Colbert, twice.
Some have criticized Garfield and Reynolds of treating the kiss as a joke, at a time when men are rarely portrayed being affectionate on TV. But while the audience loved it, Colbert and Garfield aren’t likely to dissuade critics with this repeat performance.
