Making new friends when you’re a kid is a scary prospect. What will they think of me? you wonder. Will I fit in? Will they chew on my head?
This process is no different when you’re a baby orangutan.
Gito and Asoka live in Ketapang, West Borneo, at facility run by International Animal Rescue. At first, you can see that little Gito is afraid to play with this strange new creature, and he clings to his caregiver. But with a little encouragement, the two are well on their way to becoming best friends.
It wasn’t so long ago the Gito’s outlook wasn’t so bright. IAR found him in deplorable conditions; rescuers weren’t sure he’d survive. Now, just three months later, he looks just as healthy, if not quite as confident, as his new pal.
