Zion Harvey, an 8-year-old boy from Baltimore, is the first child ever to receive a double hand transplant.
Harvey had his extremities amputated when he was 2 years old after an infection caused him to develop gangrene. His surgery took place at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where a team of 40 doctors, nurses, and staff members worked on the life changing operation.
During a news conference on Tuesday at the hospital, Harvey thanked everyone who helped with the medical breakthrough.
“I want to say to you guys, thank you, for helping me through this bumpy road,” he said with a smile.
There’s too much evil in the world, but every so often we get a reminder of all the good that humans can do. Here’s to you, Zion Harvey.
