The bad news just keeps coming for Hannibal following its NBC cancellation, as two more doors have shut in the series’ face.
Showrunner Bryan Fuller announced on Monday that Hannibal would not be picked up by Amazon or Netflix.
@MikeBarbre I’M SORRY TO REPORT @amazon AND @netflix HAVE PASSED ON #HANNIBAL S4 BUT WE’RE STILL INVESTIGATING POSSIBILITIES
— Bryan Fuller (@BryanFuller) July 6, 2015
Amazon was one of Hannibal‘s best bets, as the site already owns the rights to stream future seasons of the show. Many fans had hoped that Amazon would foot the bill for a fourth season; its streaming contract made other online services, including Netflix, less likely.
Renewing a cancelled (or “cancelled”) TV show is always complicated, and that’s doubly true in Hannibal‘s case. While the show has a vocal fanbase and staunch support from critics, its ratings on NBC were terrible, and its case for renewal is further complicated by Bryan Fuller starting work on the American Gods series this year.
Hannibal‘s departure from NBC also means that cast members have been released from their Hannibal contracts. And while Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen are keen to return for another season, at least one other cast member has already signed up for a new gig.

Despite the obstacles, the show’s producers are still working toward renewal and have urged fans to keep campaigning for another season—boosted by Fuller’s promise that he has serious plans in place for season four. However, it’s looking increasingly likely that Hannibal will join the ranks of critically acclaimed shows that were cancelled before their time.
