Apple has launched a new 2TB tier to its iCloud online storage service. The 2TB tier is double the company’s previous storage offerings and costs $19.99 a month. With the iPhone 7 right around the corner and OS X Sierra on the horizon, it makes sense for the company to be updating its services, but a new feature in Sierra may be the inspiration for the sudden upgrade.

OS X Sierra introduces the ability for users to have their Desktop and Document folders stored on iCloud, making it easier than ever to use for work. For professionals who need access to large numbers of documents or files remotely the $19.99 2TB iCloud package suddenly makes a lot of sense. As of this week, iCloud pricing works like this:

  • 5GB for free
  • 50GB for $.99
  • 200GB for $2.99
  • 1TB for $9.99
  • 2TB for $19.99

While there are certainly cheaper online storage solutions available for OS X-based professionals, iCloud is often the easiest option. Now that your all-powerful documents folder can be stored on the cloud this new tier of pricing makes a lot of sense. Apple is expected to announce its upcoming product line next week.
