Apparently, love does know an age.

average age of marriage

Most unmarried Americans would like to be married. According to a Pew Study, 61 percent of respondents (both men and women) said they’d like to be married. But marriage rates in America are at an all-time low. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that only 51 percent of adults ages 18 and older were married in 2011. By contrast, in 1960, when the average age of marriage was at an all-time high, 72 percent of all adults had tied the know.

A 2013 study found that the average age of marriage for women was 27 and 29 for men. But in individual states, the data varies considerably. For example, Utah has both the lowest average marriage age for women and men at 23.8 and 25.9, respectively. The District of Columbia wins for the oldest women at 30.2, but New York has the oldest men at 30.6.

Wondering how you stack up against? Here’s a breakdown of the average age of marriage by each state and gender from the five years between 2010-2015.
