Fans of legendary 2NE1 leader CL were thrilled when a new solo single from her upcoming English EP was announced a few days ago, and Thursday the new song, “Lifted,” made its debut.

The song is from CL’s English-language EP, which has been in the works for several years. It’ll be released on Diplo’s Mad Decent label, and CL is under management from Scooter Braun, who’s known for his work with Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande. There is no official release date for the EP yet.

Written by YG Entertainment star producer Teddy, CL, and American rapper Asher Roth, the song has a chill, reggae-inspired vibe and shows CL having fun on the streets of New York City. CL’s rapping is strong as usual and it’s notable that the track is her first in English since the deplorable “Dr. Pepper,” but something about it seems too simple. We’ve come to expect a lot of attitude after tracks like “The Baddest Female” and “Hello Bitches.” Is this what CL looks like when she’s not kicking asses?

The video immediately trended on Twitter after its release under the hashtag #CLGetLifted, with the majority of fans reacting positively. A few others did notice the overall change in tone.

“Just because you make an English song with the theme of being awesome and getting high does NOT mean it will do well in this market. You are gonna have to try a little harder than that,” wrote one Facebook user on CL’s official Facebook page.
