Baylor University has been in the throes of a sexual assault scandal for the last several weeks. According to the Associated Press, a new report suggests that students at Baylor University who feared expulsion over revealing the alcohol and drug use that coincided with their sexual assault may have remained silent.
Victims who did come forward were warned that the school would have to inform the parents of their drug and alcohol use as well. Using drugs and alcohol is strictly forbidden by the school’s code of conduct. Baylor removed “dancing” from the list of “don’ts” in 1996, and only removed “adultery,” “fornication,” and “homosexual acts,” in the last year, according to Deadspin.
The school is reportedly already working on changes that will make it easier for students to gain amnesty for drug and alcohol use when reporting sexual violence. This is of little consolation to the eight former Baylor students who came forward with allegations of sexual assault going back to 2005, the AP reported. Those former students have brought three lawsuits against Baylor. It’s unclear how the lawsuits’s outcome will affect amendments to the code of conduct.
