Some technologies have been around so long it’s hard to appreciate how much work it would be without them—washing machines, vacuums, and microwaves just to name a few. Thankfully, those things do exist, but there’s never been a device that takes care of the tedium of folding the laundry. Until now.

Enter the FoldiMate, a $700-$850 machine that will fold, steam, and perfume your clothes for you. The three-foot-high machine simply requires users to clip their clothes to the outside of the device. When the machine is turned on it will pull in each item of clothing one-by-one. The machine, which the company claims to be about as loud as a large printer, folds one article of clothing in 10 seconds.
There is a bit of fine print. The machine is not capable of folding larger items, like linens, or smaller items—wait for it—including socks. There is also a limit to the number of clothes you can put in, with a clip capacity of 15-20 depending on the size of your clothes. And the company claims there is, though less than 1 percent, a chance that the FoliMate does “something other than fold your clothes,” i.e., potentially destroy them.
While FoldiMate can steam, perfume, and sanitize your clothes, however, it is not substitute for a washer and dryer, and is designed to sit on top of them.
You can reserve your FoldiMate and be one of the more than 80,000 others. You’ll just have to fold your clothes by hand until 2018 when the company expects to begin shipping.
