Ahsoka is a beloved character in both shows, but she’s often shrouded in mystery. She was Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice before she walked away from the Jedi Order and came back years later as a key ally to the Ghost crew and integral part of Rebels’s second season. She’s gained a following over the years, particularly from young female Star Wars fans, and is a precursor to The Force Awakens’s Rey.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels Executive Producer/Supervising Director Dave Filoni noted in a statement that Ahsoka’s Star Wars novel is a response for fans who have been clamoring for more Ahsoka over the years. And given the big gap in her story between the two shows—which includes the execution of Order 66 and her eventual journey to becoming Fulcrum—there is a lot to explore.

“Ahsoka has a long history, and there is much more to it than the fans know. I have always worked on her story, even parts that I know we will probably never see on screen. By broadening her story from the animated series to the written page, I feel we have a real opportunity to provide fans with details about her character that they would not know otherwise. We are also responding to the strong fan support that we have seen Ahsoka receive over the last eight years. The fans want more Ahsoka and we are going to give it to you, and since I’ve been there since the beginning I am dedicated to working with publishing to help make this book as authentic a part of her story as if we filmed it for the series.”

Johnston, a big Star Wars fan herself, is thrilled to be able to dive into Ahsoka’s story.

“Writing for Ahsoka is tremendously exciting,” Johnston said. “She has a blank spot in her story that I know a lot of fans (including myself!) want to see filled in. And being able to help tell her story is a dream come true.”
