J.C. Penney has been going through some tough times lately. Financial losses coupled with restructuring have plunged the department store into precarious fiscal territory. But it seems the company’s devised a plan to stay somewhat relevant, at least via social media. It involves hashtags. A lot of them.

J.C. Penney’s social media team tweeted out this incentive yesterday, offering a $10 discount off a $25 purchase to anyone who says “hashtag offer” at the register, out loud, today.

That’s right, don’t forget to “drop the mic” in front on that J.C. Penney cashier! Seems the company’s picking up on the trend started by Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake’s recent hashtag IRL video. Or, maybe it’s just some desperate, sadistic social media manager’s idea.

Wait, there’s an accompanying video that supports that first idea.

J.C. Penney’s even got a Vine promotion going, so don’t be afraid to vine your verbal hashtag offer at J.C. Penney’s today. And don’t forget to drop the mic, then question your #lifechoices. (Real talk, though: J.C. Penney’s Twitter is sort of amazing.)
