The list of those who plan on boycotting the inauguration of President-elect’s Donald Trump won’t include his biggest political opponent.
Both Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton will attend Trump’s inauguration, sources told New York magazine. CBS News later confirmed the New York report. The news contradicts reports in December that the Clintons were planning to skip Trump’s swearing-in.
The Clintons will a join former President George W. Bush, First Lady Laura Bush ,and former President Jimmy Carter in attending the inaugural festivities on Jan. 20, 2017. President Barack Obama will, of course, also attend Trump’s inauguration, bringing the total number of former presidents at the event to three.
It is customary for all living presidents to attend a president’s first inauguration, regardless of political party. All four living presidents (George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter) attended Obama’s inauguration in 2008. Both Bushes did skip out on Obama’s 2012 inauguration, citing the elder Bush’s health problems.
George H.W. Bush, who is wheelchair bound, is the only living president not expected to attend the inaugural event at the nation’s capitol.
