Is name transfer a Fiasco?

You can lend out your microphone. You can lend out your car. You can lend out your house. But can you lend out your Twitter account – or even give it away?

Apparently, you can.

Musician Lupe Fiasco announced that after being a ubiquitous twitter user, he’s giving it up. It happens. You tweet. You tire. You retire.

Except that Fiasco happens to have 722,581 followers. That’s a pretty big deal on Twitter. So instead of simply exiting the stage and living offline for awhile, he’s donating his Twitter feed to fellow musician, Nikki Jean to help promote her music.

Early Wednesday Fiasco posted this tweet: “i’m quitting twitter. it was fun while it lasted…”

Almost immediately, he tweeted this followup: “u know what??? i’m gonna let @NIKKIJEAN takeover my twitter — go get that albumhttp://bit.ly/nikkijeanitunes.”

Just an hour later, Nikki Jean, whose own Twitter feed is @nikkijean, posted her first greeting: “Hello Lasers this is @nikkijean.”

Incidentally, @nikkijean has 7,089 followers – a pretty decent number but clearly one that pales in comparison to Fiasco.

It wasn’t clear if Fiasco was giving his account away or merely lending it. @nikkijean had this to say: “Big thank you to @LupeFiasco for supporting my record. He won’t be gone for too long.. Promise ;-)”

As long as Fiasco didn’t sell his account the transfer doesn’t appear to violate Twitter’s rules (Accounts have been publicly swapped for charity, with approval.).  But the question remains this: Will @LupeFiasco’s followers continue to follow @nikkijean?

Or will it be a Fiasco?
