Despite President Trump’s determination to keep manufacturing jobs in the U.S., Ford intends to continue its production south of the border—confirming this week that two Mexican plants will see expansion in 2017.
Ford CEO Mark Fields met with Trump along with manufacturing and auto CEOs in Trump’s early days in office to discuss plans to bring back American jobs. Trump praised the meeting after, taking to Twitter to announce Ford “scrapping a new plant in Mexico” and the promise of 700 more jobs in the U.S. via Ford’s $700 million investment in a Michigan plant.
Fields called the meetings the first steps toward a “Renaissance in American manufacturing.”
But those canceled plans for a new plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico? They merely shift 3,000 jobs to one of the existing Ford Mexican plants.

Just got a call from my friend Bill Ford, Chairman of Ford, who advised me that he will be keeping the Lincoln plant in Kentucky – no Mexico

Despite all of Trump’s praise, it’s clear Ford is thinking economically.
